Geography Curriculum Statement of Intent
At Priors Wood Primary School, it is our intent for the Geography curriculum to inspire in our pupils a curiosity, fascination and understanding of the world through exploration. We believe that our Geography curriculum should provide all pupils with the ability to explore, delve deeper and make connections to find out about our world.
Our Geography curriculum will equip pupils with secure location knowledge and understanding of diverse places, human and physical geography, geographical and map skills and field work through topic-based enquiry.
Our world is ever-changing and we believe geographical enquiry should reflect the dynamic nature of people and places and allow pupils to explore current environmental issues. A key aspect of our Geography curriculum is to encourage our pupils to show respect for their local, national and international environment. Through caring for our world, pupils will understand the influence humans can have on the world’s physical environment and what actions they can take to reduce their impact.
Our vision is to equip our pupils with secure geographical knowledge and understanding as well as the skills to explore their world and become responsible and valued citizens in our society.
Aims and Impact
The aims of Geography at Priors Wood Primary School are:
- Enthuse, engage and motivate children to develop their understanding of the world and foster a sense of curiosity and wonder at the beauty of the world around them.
- Provide pupils with secure location knowledge of the world’s continents, oceans, countries, counties and cities.
- Provide children with a secure understanding of where they live in relation to the rest of the world through learning about their own locality; helping them make sense of their own surroundings.
- Teach pupils about a variety of places around the world and increase pupils understanding and respect of other cultures.
- Provide opportunities for pupils to explore the human and physical features of different places around the world.
- Provide pupils with a platform to form opinions about different places and make comparisons.
- Develop children’s understanding of the world’s human and physical processes and their impact on the environment.
- Encourage in children a commitment to sustainability and an appreciation of how they can care for our world.
- Develop geographical and map skills, including how to use, draw and interpret maps, globes and atlases of different scales.
- To formulate appropriate questions and develop geographical research skills.
- To enable children to work geographically in a range of appropriate contexts; through fieldwork in our school and local environment.
- Develop pupils’ understanding of geographical vocabulary necessary to carry out effective geographical enquiry.
